Course description

The course (in English) covers the conceptual thinking necessary for diagnostic, etiognostic (etiologic), descriptive prognostic, and intervention prognostic research and offers practical exercises related to clinical research projects (research questions, theoretical design, data collection methods, and analysis). Participants are recommended to attend this course before they attend Practical Data Analysis for Clinical Epidemiology.

Prerequisites and fee

None, although basic knowledge of clinical research as presented in the short lectures of Clinical Epidemiology I and Clinical Epidemiology II is welcome. The course is free and open to all students, academic staff, and medical staff of Kitasato University and Kitasato Institute with an interest in clinical, patient-oriented research.

Course description

The course (in English) offers insight in the concepts involved in data analysis for clinical, patient-oriented research. In addition, it gives participants the opportunity to become familiar with the free statistical analysis package R while preparing, coding, and analyzing data as they are encountered in diagnostic, etiognostic (etiologic), descriptive prognostic, and intervention prognostic research.

Prerequisites and fee

None, although practical knowledge of study design as presented in the course Practical Study Design for Clinical Epidemiology is welcome. The course is free and open to all students, academic staff, and medical staff of Kitasato University and Kitasato Institute with an interest in clinical, patient-oriented research.

Course description

Diagnostic research in the past focused particularly on estimating the sensitivity and specificity of individual diagnostic tests. This course will demonstrate that this so called ‘test research’ is not necessarily the same as diagnostic research. Furthermore, we will widen the horizon by proposing modern methods of diagnostic research and data analysis in which a patient’s test result can and should be considered in the context of other patient characteristics or test results.

Prerequisites and fee

Understanding of fundamental concepts in clinical research and experience with basic biostatistical analyses. The course is free and open to all students, academic staff, and medical staff of Kitasato University and Kitasato Institute with an interest in clinical, patient-oriented research.

Registration

Registration by November 10 at the Kitasato Clinical Research Center: info@kitasato-crc.org or call 042-777-6308.

Advanced Prognostic Research

Course description

This course will highlight the principles and methods of non-experimental prognostic research. Through highly interactive lectures, practicals, and discussions of real life examples the practice of prognostic research in a clinical setting is addressed. Emphasis will be on design and statistical analysis of prognostic studies, construction and estimation of prediction rules and approaches to validation and generalization of research results.

Prerequisites and fee

Understanding of fundamental concepts in clinical research and experience with basic biostatistical analyses. The course is free and open to all students, academic staff, and medical staff of Kitasato University and Kitasato Institute with an interest in clinical, patient-oriented research.

Course description

Systematic reviews are transparent and reproducible studies of available evidence on a research topic and a meta-analysis is the formal, quantitative analytical part of such a review. This course will give a practical introduction to systematic reviews and meta-analysis with practical sessions and computer practicals in the afternoon.

Prerequisites and fee

Understanding of fundamental concepts in clinical research and experience with basic biostatistical analyses. The course is free and open to all students, academic staff, and medical staff of Kitasato University and Kitasato Institute with an interest in clinical, patient-oriented research.

Course description

Meta-analysis is the formal, quantitative analytical part of a systematic review. This course will give a quick overview of general issues in systematic reviews and will continue with a formal but practical introduction to meta-analytical statistics. Topics include common models for meta-analysis, Bayesian approaches, statistical methods for quatifying and exploring heterogeneity, assessing publication biases, incorporating individual patient data, and generalized evidence synthesis.

Prerequisites and fee

Understanding of fundamental concepts in clinical research and good grasp of basic  biostatistical analyses. The course is free and open to all students, academic staff, and medical staff of Kitasato University and Kitasato Institute with an interest in clinical, patient-oriented research.
